The MBS is the schedule used to define Medicare services, schedule fees and applicable benefit amounts. It is not the same thing as a provider's actual charge. Core AU ingests the official XML release and keeps a direct link back to MBS Online.
The MBS schedule fee and Medicare benefit are reference amounts under Medicare. A doctor or other provider can charge a different fee. Use the Medical Costs Finder and a written provider estimate to understand likely out-of-pocket costs.
Read the descriptor
The descriptor defines what the item covers and can contain clinical, provider, timing or other conditions.
Separate fee from benefit
Schedule fee, 75%, 85% and 100% benefit fields are Medicare reference amounts—not a promise of the provider's charge.
Check actual costs
Use the Medical Costs Finder and ask the provider for a written estimate when planning out-of-pocket costs.
